I decided that when I woke up this morning, that I wasn’t going to check the weather. I was going to just get ready and go! I didn’t want to give myself a reason to worry. It didn’t work
I made the mistake of turning on the radio. The weather report painted a story of rain, high wind, and thunderstorms. Shit! If that wasn’t something to worry about.
The night before I had booked a room on a hostel in Nelson – a place called the White House – As you all know I love the USA and the president, and so this made me feel good. I digress. Its a private room room in a hostel, so it’s just like a hotel, except I have to share (hog) the bathroom. Anyway, since I already paid, I wasn’t about to back out, but I was worried I’d be rained on or that heavy rain would make the drive difficult.
I left, rather grumpy and tired, around 7:45am.
It had already rained in New West, and it continued to rain off and on to hope. Once I made it to Manning Park there was even some sun poking through the clouds.
As I left Manning, the sun was out fully. And the temp was rising. I spoke to Nicole and she said the forecast calls for clear and sunny skies for the next couple days! Fantastic!
Incidentally, I talked to a couple who drove though heavy rain on the way to the campsite today, only a short time after I did. I was lucky!
As I stopped in Princeton, I checked voice mail and found that the campsite I had booked (Tamari) had called me and said that I had one hour to produce a deposit for my stay, or they were going to cancelle the reservations. They had made no indication that this was required, and I was so pissed off about it, I decided to try and find somewhere else before giving them my business. They should have told me that all along.
As of turns put, the Cabana Beach campsite, where I have stayed on all my previous trips, had a spot! I’m happy to be there. I even hand the quite side of the cabanas.
I got set up (slowly in the 37 degrees) and then went into town to find air conditioning, sun glasses, food, and beer!
I had a nice stop at a local pub and had some lunch. Sun glasses were harder to find than I expected, but eventually I found some at a local hardware store. They ended up not having the nose pieces ( looked as though someone had torn them out!) When I went back to see if I could exchange them. They gave me a pair twice as expensive for $5 more. Good customer service!
Then back to the campsite where I spent a couple hours sitting on the dock, with the waves washing over me. It was wonderful. It’s sooo Hot. The lake water is warmer than a public pool – refreshing but very comfortable.
After getting wet, I met my neighbors -a police ossifer and his wife from Vancouver. We had a nice chat about camping trailers (boring) and then about motorcycles (he pretended he knew about them. I pretended too).
As the sun went down I went for one of my favorite / famous barefoot walks ( 2 hrs! ) and sat on the dock some more.
A quick chat with Nicole, and I’m off to bed! Nighty night (sweaty night)!
